I have become so good at distorting my own reality. An uncomfortable feeling comes in and I tell myself I shouldn’t be feeling like this. I convince myself there’s something wrong or I say things like, there are so many people worse off than me.
The reason I distort my reality so often is because facing the uncomfortable feelings is exactly that, uncomfortable.
Today, you are going to tune up the volume on your self awareness and set up a practice throughout the day to notice, to name and to acknowledge.
How connected are you to your feelings today?
When an uncomfortable feeling shows up, what’s your first instinct?
How often do you actually check in with how you’re feeling during the day?
When someone asks how you are, what’s your typical answer?
Could you tell the difference between a feeling and a thought right now?
When something uncomfortable comes up, what usually happens next?
Feelings are not thoughts.
Feelings are the physical sensations you feel in your body. Thoughts are something else entirely, even when they get called feelings.
These are physical feelings.
Light. Calm. Heavy. Anxious. Sad.
These sometimes get mistaken for feelings.
However, they are actually thoughts. Disappointed. Overwhelmed. Rushed.
Set this up now.
Today’s move: set 6 alarms or reminders on your phone, one every two and a half hours. When one goes off, close your eyes, hone in on your innermost self and ask yourself, how am I really feeling right now? Then give it a name.
Say this out loud.
“I am putting in the work to notice and acknowledge how I feel, even when it’s uncomfortable.”
