Day 12 Check-In | GRIT in Five

Food for Thought

Today, we are revisiting triggers. A couple of days ago, you had to check off all the things that got under your skin. You had to notice them and you had to say, “it happened. I can’t change it.” Then you had to move on.

I don’t think I can say this phrase enough. It all begins with noticing. Noticing is eighty percent or more of the win. If we don’t notice, we will just default to the very behaviours that at one stage kept us safe, but are now outdated. We know they’re not good. We know they’re not the best version of ourselves and we’d really like to change them, but that happens with noticing.

I just want to take a moment here to pause and say something really important. Whatever your default behaviours are when you are triggered, you need to know that at one stage they kept you safe. You have been doing this your entire life and changing this is going to take an immense amount of patience, courage and repeated behaviour, again and again, until it becomes your new default.

You are going to get it right, feel amazing and then you’re going to default to old behaviours. Then you will notice and get back up and then you will try again. You are going to do this again and again and again. So please, when you slip back, celebrate getting back up. Do not pick the beat-myself-up stick and tell yourself that you don’t have what it takes because you absolutely do.

Today’s move: notice your triggers. The moment something shifts how you’re feeling, whether it’s a physical sensation or a sudden change in behaviour, that’s the trigger. Pause. Notice what your default would be, speed up, snap, or withdraw. Once you’ve noticed and paused, give yourself an acknowledgement in any shape or form.

You are doing such great, deep work! Well done!

You are going to default sometimes. That’s not failure, that’s just the pattern working itself out.

See you tomorrow.
